Stellenbosch: Oaks, Gables & Stories

There is far more to Stellenbosch than vineyards and wine.

Founded as a colonial settlement in 1679, Stellenbosch grew beside the Eerste River on land with a much older Indigenous history. Over the centuries, fires, changing architectural fashions, slavery, agriculture, education and political change all left their mark on the town.

On this two-hour walking tour, we explore the historic centre beneath the oak trees that gave Stellenbosch its nickname, Eikestad—the City of Oaks. Along the way, we encounter Cape Dutch gables, Cape Georgian façades, Victorian details and the striking neo-Gothic Moederkerk.

We walk through Church Street, Dorp Street, Die Braak and the university quarter while discussing Simon van der Stel, the development of the Cape wine industry, the lives of enslaved and free people, the town’s religious communities and the rise of Stellenbosch University.

This is not simply a walk past beautiful buildings. It is a journey through the people, power, contradictions and creativity that shaped one of South Africa’s best-known historic towns.
